ABOUT US

SMU Red Cross is a community service club dedicated to relieving human suffering, protecting human lives and dignity, and responding to emergencies. As one of Singapore Red Cross' youth chapters, we aim to provide you with ample opportunities to aid vulnerable communities such as children and elderly while teaching and learning essential life-saving skills such as first aid and CPR. We also support humanitarian efforts such as the Pakistan flood relief campaign last year and support our local communities by holding biannual blood donation drives on campus. By joining us as a volunteer, Organising Committee member or even as a part of our ExCo, you can look forward to finding like-minded individuals who are just as passionate as you in developing themselves and each other to better serve our community together.

Come and be a part of the largest humanitarian network, with over 17 million volunteers in over 190 countries, and begin your journey with us now!

KEY EVENTS

  1. Project Advancing Community (AC) & Project Developing Community (DC)
As trained first-aiders ourselves, we strongly believe that learning first-aid knowledge is vital. These life-saving skills can empower elderly (Project AC) and primary school children (Project DC) to respond swiftly to emergencies and help themselves and others around them. At the same time, we bond with the elderly and encourage curiosity in our children through our fun games and hands-on activities. As a volunteer or Organising Committee member of these projects, you can look forward to joining our annual Red Cross Camp too!
  2. Biannual Internal Blood Donation Drives
Did you know that 1 bag of blood can save 3 lives and that we need more than 400 bags of blood every day? To support our local blood bank, we hold biannual blood drives in February and September to collect around 110 blood bags each from our SMU community (students, faculty and staff).
  3. Charity Pop-Up
Last year, we worked with Singapore Red Cross's SHOP+ to raise funds for the Pakistan flood relief campaign by selling clothes donated by our SMU community (students, faculty and staff). As an added bonus, we sold our merchandise too - name tents, T-shirts, stickers and more! We'll be back this year in October so keep your eyes peeled for our emails!
  4. Ad hoc Events: Food Donation Drive & RE:Connect
Recently held in March, we worked with Willing Hearts for the first time and held a food donation drive with 146 items collected. We also had our very first membership event, RE:Connect, with our Red Cross members to celebrate our achievements with each other and hear more from Singapore Red Cross about what volunteerism is all about!

However, if you would like to become a volunteer, Organising Committee member or ExCo member, there is a selection process - usually involving an interview.

“One decision I do not regret making was signing up for Red Cross. It was where I forged my first friendship in SMU. My campmates and I also continued to keep in contact by volunteering for Project AC together and having meetups after volunteering sessions!”

- Rebecca Tan, Honorary General Secretary & Project AC 80-hour Bundle Participant 2019/20, School of Social Sciences, Year 3

“Red Cross has presented me with many opportunities to engage in events, make friends, learn and network. An example would be facilitating Red  cross camp 2019 when I had a great time introducing red cross to the freshies and forged many friendships that last even till today.”

- Martin Layar, Project AC 80-hour Bundle Participant 2018/19 & SICS Red Cross Camp Facilitator 2019, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Year 4
