ABOUT US
SMU Purple is a student group passionate about raising disability awareness and promoting inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in SMU. Our name draws inspiration from the colour purple, a powerful symbol of dignity, representation, and solidarity for the PWD community.
We work closely with the Student Accessibility Support (SAS) team under the Mrs Wong Kwok Leong Student Wellness Centre, alongside a range of external organisations and student groups. Through the events and initiatives we plan and execute, SMU Purple strives to build a more inclusive SMU.
At SMU Purple, we believe that changing mindsets starts with sparking the right conversations today. If you’re ready to create an impact, join us!
KEY EVENTS
Purple Bazaar
Purple Bazaar is SMU Purple’s flagship event, held in celebration of the limitless abilities of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) within the SMU community and beyond. It features booths by non-profit organisations, social enterprises, SMU student groups and more, all coming together to raise greater awareness and promote inclusitivity.
The Purple Parade
The Purple Parade is Singapore’s largest movement supporting inclusion and celebrating the talents and contributions of the PWD community. Since 2022, SMU Purple has organised SMU contingents comprising students, faculty and staff members to march in solidarity with the PWD community.
Experiential Field Trips
For students interested in learning more about persons with disabilities and their lived experiences, SMU Purple offers opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. From exploring assistive technology at Enabling Village to an immersive Dining in the Dark experience at the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped, we are always finding ways to make learning fun and meaningful.
Talks, Workshops and Dialogues
At SMU Purple, we believe that the stigma surrounding disability should never go unchallenged. Through the talks, workshops and dialogues we host, students are invited to navigate the tough but necessary questions with us and other individuals with lived experiences.
