SMU Purple
ABOUT US
We are a group of students dedicated to driving disability awareness and promoting inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in SMU. We collaborate closely with the Disability Support Services office (DSS, under Mrs Wong Kwok Leong Student Wellness Centre) in our initiatives and projects.
Our name “SMU Purple” is inspired by the fact that the colour purple has increasingly been associated with disability awareness and inclusion. We believe that efforts to make our campus accessible should extend into both an individual’s academic experience and student life. If you’re also interested in promoting the equality of opportunities for our peers with accessibility needs, join us!
KEY EVENTS
- Human Library
We host human library events, where speakers with disabilities share about their experiences with participants through intimate group settings and panel discussions. Topics can range from day-to-day life to the transition to work. - Purple Bazaar
An annual bazaar organised in SMU in celebration of the annual Purple Parade and related campaign activities. It consists of various booths featuring non-profit organisations, social enterprises, and SMU project initiatives in support of People with Disabilities (PwDs). - Purple Parade
A contingent of students and staff representing SMU at the annual Purple Parade in Singapore. The Purple Parade is Singapore's largest annual gathering that seeks to advocate for inclusion and celebrates the abilities of PWDs. - Experiential Field Trips
From a trip to the Enabling Village to learn more about assistive technology and efforts to promote inclusion for PwDs, to a trip to the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped to experience Dining in the Dark, our field trips are both fun and eye-opening. - Focus Group Discussions with PwDs and SMU CCAs
A long-term effort to engage students with disabilities and CCA leaders in SMU to provide greater support and accommodations, promoting the equality of opportunities for our peers with accessibility needs in their student life.
