About Us
Founded in 2018, SMU Real Estate and Alternate Investments is SMU's premier club committed to connecting you to the world of real estate and alternate investments, which spans across a wide variety of asset classes such as Office, Retail, Industrial, Hospitality, Logistics and Data Centres.
Under our programme, analysts participate in weekly training sessions designed to build a strong foundation in finance and investments, rooted in the tangible, asset-driven nature of real estate. This, coupled with the development of analytical and industry-relevant skill sets, equips our analysts with a strong competitive advantage in the industry.
Beyond our rigorous curriculum, analysts can look forward to connecting with our extensive network of alumni and industry professionals through a lineup of networking and industry events throughout the year. Many of our alumni remain actively involved with the club, regularly returning to mentor members and share insights from their academic and professional experiences.
Just as importantly, SMUREAL is built on a strong sense of community. Analysts become part of a close-knit group of driven and like-minded individuals who support, challenge and grow alongside each other throughout their time in the club and beyond. FAQ

A common misconception amongst many is that real estate equates to being a property agent. While property agents are indeed a job function within the real estate industry, SMUREAL's programme focuses on preparing analysts for roles such as investments and asset management within commercial real estate. This is done through our rigorous and structured curriculum that equips our analysts with the fundamentals and analytical skillsets, helping our analysts gain a competitive edge in the industry.
At it's core, the real estate industry is about owning, managing, investing in, and developing physical, tangible assets that people use every day. These include the shopping malls, offices, residential buildings, hotels, and industrial facilities that you walk past everyday. For instance, a REIT like Capitaland Integrated Commercial Trust (CICT) constantly evaluates the performance of it's portfolio of assets such as the shopping mall 'Plaza Singapura' via means such as adjusting it's tenant mix, asset enhancement initiatives, and the deployment of capital through acquisitions and divestments. Other players include developers, consultancies, private equity, and more.
Our analyst programme spans across one academic year, with training sessions being held once a week, lasting 2-3 hours. Analysts will also be expected to commit some additional hours for deliverables, which is manageable with good time management and further solidifies the concepts and fundamentals analysts can look forward to developing in their time with SMUREAL.
Recruitment for Analysts typically opens in a 2-week window at the start of Semester 1. Interested candidates should keep a lookout for updates via our social media channels, where we will be posting more details nearer to the date.
The recruitment process generally starts with a case study, given to Candidates to complete and submit as a deliverable. Shortlisted candidates will then proceed to the next round, where you will present your analysis, before going through a short interview to assess your understanding, commitment, and fit with the club.
We are looking for individuals who with a growth mindset and a strong desire to learn. As such, we do not place a heavy emphasis on any prior knowledge, but instead look for individuals committed and will complement the community we have built over the years.
