SMU Apolitical Society

ABOUT US
SMU Apolitical, was established in 2010 by Mr Mohamed Irshad, who is currently a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) and the founder of an inter-faith organisation, Roses of Peace. As SMU's first student political association, it strives to increase awareness of local and international politics in a non-partisan manner. In addition, it seeks to provide the SMU community with an avenue for discussion, for issues relating to public policy and social issues affecting society at-large.
Besides facilitating a free exchange of ideas and creating inclusive platforms such as the Singapore Model Cabinet and dialogue sessions for youths to participate in, SMU Apolitical also has its own publications including a guide to Singapore's political system as well as short commentaries.

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Annual Singapore Model Cabinet (SMC) for Tertiary Students
One of our signature events includes the SMC, which is organised annually in collaboration with NUSPA to provide a platform for tertiary students the opportunity to engage and understand the constitutional role of Cabinet as the executive branch of government. Participants will role-play as members of Cabinet and work together as a Cabinet to identify, critically consider and deliberate the trade-offs of policy making, and propose pragmatic solutions to address the given scenario. - Official Primer Student Publication on Ink@SMU
We have our very own publication known as the Primer Series which is written by a team of staff writers and officially published under SMU. It aims to provide an overview and correct some common misconceptions on public policies and law.
OUR PEOPLE IN ACTION
HOW TO JOIN THE CLUB?
Students do no need to go through an interview to join SMU Apolitical Society.
"Apolitical broadened my knowledge of current affairs and equipped me to think critically in analysing socio-economic issues affecting us daily. Its inclusive culture and activities accommodate students from all faculties and levels. I have made my best friends here and wish the same for anyone who joins the 'Apol Community'! "
- Abbas Ali Mohamed Anas, School of Business, Year 4
"I have been a member in the society for 2 years. Even though I had no experience with politics when I joined, Apolitical was extremely welcoming. I learnt a lot through my interactions with leading policy makers and participation in concrete community service events."
-Matt Soo, School of Law, Year 3
