SMU SoundFoundry
ABOUT US
SoundFoundry is a CCA for people with a passion for music. Our members are exposed to a myriad of music-related activities, including but not limited to: instrument techniques, recording, production and band dynamic techniques. Members can form bands and perform through various channels, such as through internal recordings and productions, school-wide events, and even external gigs.
Our CCA provides both quality musical training for our members and the freedom and creativity to make their own music. SoundFoundry frequently sources for performance and recording opportunities to allow members to perform, as well as take ownership for their musical growth. Students eager to join can expect to be challenged musically and grow as a musician in an inclusive and open-minded community.

KEY EVENTS
- Last Friday Nite! 2023
An annual SoundFoundry music festival featuring our very own bands. As an end-of-semester celebration, our annual music festivals have evolved to become an indispensable part of SMU student life and yearly tradition. - Annual Production: The Red Gala 2024
An annual production featuring homegrown talents collaborating with mentors from the music industry. With a focus on self-written songs and originality, SoundFoundry’s annual production is an opportunity for members to develop their songwriting skills and showmanship on stage. - Amplify Camp
A music-centric camp for freshmen held at the beginning of the school year aimed to act as a launching pad for new SoundFoundry members to explore their musical journey in SMU. Here, they will be able to network and meet like-minded freshmen and new members. - Valentine's Day Drive
Spreading love on this special day through live music and thoughtful gifts (a customised Spotify keychain giftpack) made by our own SoundFoundry members. For Vday 2023, we took up song requests from the public and performed them live at T-junction. - ESPRESSIVO: SoundFoundry's Community Service Programme (CSP)
Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate, usually caused by a stroke or head injury. Aiming to utilise music for a good cause, SMU SoundFoundry partners with Aphasia SG by supporting their music therapy sessions, choir practices, music videos, and other marketing collaterals to increase Aphasia SG's exposure. Members may have the opportunity to sign up for this CSP after a semester in the club.

HOW TO JOIN THE CLUB?
Auditions into SF will open from July 10th - August 20th.
Newcomers shall take part in our freshmen orientation camp: Amplify.
More information can be found on our Instagram Page @smusoundfoundry, and our recurring emails throughout this period.
The prerequisite for prospective members is to have a good foundation in vocal techniques, and or be well-versed with their instrument of choice. All instruments are welcomed (yes, really!), and we accept a variety of other talents such as music production and sound engineering.
"I was searching for a music club on VIVACE. I was trying to find club that allows me to write lyrics and make music. Although I have little experience with the DAW and my voice isn't great, I enjoy music. It is a way for me to de-stress and relax. So regardless of whether I getting in, I look forward to attending the performances =). Cheers!"

“SoundFoundry has provided me with great opportunities to perform with my bandmates. These memories are some of the best I’ve had in university and I will always hold them close to my heart. Strangers I met in my band became friends that I still meet with, and we have lots of fun making music together!”

FAQ
SF organises two major concerts, namely the Annual Production (AP) and End-of-Year Music Festival, where we gather SF members to showcase their musical talent and skills. We also have various internal events that give members opportunities to perform/record, as well as external gigs available through our band registry.
Additionally, to supplement our members’ musical growth, we conduct the Training and Development (TnD) programme, as well as various music workshops and events for our members to learn and interact with each other. Members can also expect to take part in networking events where members get to meet other musicians in the music industry.
Last but not least, members can look forward to spending a lot of time in our very own Basement Studio that is fully furnished for you and your band to have fun playing your favorite songs.
While beginner lessons are not part of our Training and Development (TnD) curriculum, members are highly encouraged to pick up and learn new instruments throughout their years in SF. Our community is a great place to get encouragement, feedback, resources, and advice from peers and seniors who play your instrument of interest. We also conduct workshops that teach more advanced techniques and theory.
The Band Registry comprises SF's selected performance-ready musicians and bands, who will be offered and informed of curated (and sometimes paid!) gig opportunities from both SMU and the public. The Band Registry is open for all SF members to audition!
Members have the liberty of taking charge of their own progress in SF. While incoming members will be assigned to a band for our Amplify Camp (SF’s orientation camp for newcomers), you are free to form bands throughout your time in SMU, with whoever and whenever you like for the purposes of performance opportunities, casual jamming, and even songwriting (or you could go solo too!).
Nevertheless, our CCA events provide platforms and networking opportunities for members to forge friendships and understand more about each other’s music tastes and talents, so that they may form bands more organically.
The SF membership lasts for your entire stint as a student in SMU. Beyond the schooling years, SF continues to engage our alumni in our many activities and events.
As an SF member, you are (1) entitled to book and use the SF Basement Studio, (2) entitled to attend General Meetings and Internal Elections, (3) qualified to run for EXCO positions
Most importantly, SF members hold the privilege to perform in our prestigious productions, take part in external gigs, and play a part in building our strong and active community.
