If you’re looking for friends and fun while staying connected to the Malay culture and community, Malay Language & Cultural Club (MLCC) might just be for you.
MLCC is a vibrant events-based student community centred around celebrating Malay arts, language, and traditions while creating meaningful friendships and unforgettable university experiences. Throughout the year, we bring students together through a diverse range of cultural, social, and community events that are open to all students and alumni.
For those with a passion for music and performance, MLCC is also home to Rentak, Singapore's only tertiary-level Malay percussion ensemble. Under the mentorship of Singapore's top Malay performing artists, you'll get to learn and play a variety of traditional instruments and perform at major events.

Iftar Night
Experience the spirit of Ramadan at Iftar Night, our annual collaboration with SMU Muslim Society (SMUMS)! Gather over a shared meal, connect with fellow students, and learn more about the traditions and values of this special month. Open to all SMU students, including exchange students, whether you're Muslim or simply curious to learn more about the culture.
MLCC Orientation
Start your MLCC journey at our annual Orientation! Meet new friends, learn more about our community, and enjoy a fun-filled session of bonding and cultural experiences. Whether you're a freshman, senior, or exchange student, there's a place for you in MLCC!
Mat Gala
Dress up, lepak, makan, and make memories at Mat Gala, one of MLCC’s most anticipated events of the year! From Hollywood glamour to cosy pyjama nights, every edition brings a new theme and a fresh experience. Expect great food, exciting performances, and an unforgettable night with even better company.
Misteri Series
Every spooky season, MLCC brings a thrilling mystery to campus! From immersive haunted houses to spine-chilling sharing sessions, each year offers a unique experience. Previous guests have included renowned paranormal speaker Ustaz Fadhly Rosli and True Horror Stories POV host Naqiah Ayub, who captivated audiences with their eerie encounters. Rentak Production
Every two years, Rentak takes centre stage with a large-scale production that celebrates the richness of Malay arts through music, performance, and creativity. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Rentak, making it an extra special milestone you won't want to miss. Whether you're performing on stage, working behind the scenes, or clapping from the audience, be part of this landmark celebration and experience the magic of Rentak!

Our events are open to ALL students and alumni regardless of race and ethnic background. Occasionally, some events are open to the public too!

There is no minimum or maximum — join any events that interest you! There is no commitment requirement for members of this club, unless you are a member of the Executive Committee. Each event participation will be reflected in your co-curricular transcript. If you'd like SMU MLCC "MEMBER" to be reflected in your transcript, attend 3 or more events in an academic year!
Nope, only if you're interested! Rentak is MLCC's percussion ensemble with regular weekly trainings and performances/showcases throughout the year. To officially join the Rentak team, indicate your interest during our recruitment drive called Rentak Experience Day (RED).
