About Us
Established in AY2024/2025, the Health Economics & Management Society (SMUHEM) is SMU's student community for anyone passionate about healthcare. While we are rooted in supporting HEM students through their academic journey, our events are open to all SMU students curious about the healthcare sector. Our efforts focus on three things: building a tight-knit community of healthcare-minded students, connecting members with industry professionals through talks and networking sessions, along with creating opportunities for real-world exposure. Our vision is to empower students to excel academically and make meaningful contributions to the healthcare sector, whether that is in consulting, pharma, hospitals, policy or somewhere we have not imagined yet.
Key Events
1. Fireside Chats -- Connect with like-minded students who share your passion for healthcare. These sessions are a relaxed space to bid for classes together, support each other through challenging modules and build friendships with peers who understand your interests and goals. Whether you are looking for study buddies, future collaborators or just good company in a niche field, this is where it starts.
2. Industry Talks -- Get an insider's look at the healthcare sector through sessions with industry experts and our HEM alumni. Past events have covered perspectives from pharmaceutical companies, market research firms and seniors now working across the industry. These talks will expose you to interview tips, essential skills, real career paths and how a HEM second major can shape your future. Beyond the learning, these are also great opportunities to network with SMU seniors and seasoned professionals in a more personal setting.
3. Mentorship Programme -- Launched in AY2025/2026, our semester-long mentorship programme pairs prospective HEM students with seniors who have been through it. Mentees get first-hand insights into the major, course planning, career paths and everything in between. That is the kind of advice that is hard to find anywhere else.

No, students from all schools are able to take HEM as a 2nd major. For more information on what second majors you can take, go to OASIS → Academic Tab → Curriculum Advisement → Second Major Requirements → Click on your school. (Find HEM under School of Economics)
No, our club is free of charge!
Not at all! SMUHEM is open to all SMU students across schools and majors. Whether you are a HEM major, considering taking up HEM as a second major or simply curious about the healthcare sector, there is a place for you here. Our events and community are designed to welcome anyone interested in exploring healthcare, so no prior background is needed.
